What is Special about Sculpture?
Art takes many forms, and Sculpture is one of the most intriguing forms of art. The artistic creation of three-dimensional objects has always been fascinating for many art lovers and collectors. In sculptures artists use a wide variety of media, including wood, stone, clay, metal, rubber, plaster, glass, wax and even fabric. As a result sculpture involves a range of processes as sometimes such materials need to be shaped, welded, sewn, moulded, carved or go through some kind of process. Considering the diversity of sculptures and the materials used, sculpture is generally divided in four broad categories or processes, namely, modelling, carving, casting and constructing. Carving needs to be carried out when cutting and scraping is required on the stone or wood, and sometimes on bone or ivory. Casting involves creating a mould and pouring molten material like rubber or plastic into it in order to create the desired shape. Casting takes place on wax, clay and plaster, among the most common materials. Modelling, will involve a soft material like wax or clay that can be built up artistically by the sculptor. Sculptures sometimes require construction and assembly and so processes such as stitching and weaving, or welding and bolting, may be required to complete the sculpture. Many feel that sculpture enables artists to go beyond their imagination to express themselves creatively and resourcefully.
